Conor McGregor says he is “very close” to finalizing a deal for his comeback fight in Las Vegas later this year.
The most beloved Irishman – a former two-weight class UFC world champion – will fight the undefeated Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov in Las Vegas on October 6 for the lightweight title.
Last week UFC President, Dana White, said former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor versus today’s lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is “the fight everybody wants to see”.
McGregor was ordered by court to perform five days of community service last week after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct following a disturbance at a UFC media day in April. He was dismissed of all felony charges, avoiding jail time and a criminal record.
The 30-year-old McGregor was last in the octagon in November 2016 when he beat Eddie Alvarez to add the lightweight title to his featherweight belt.
His last fight came in the boxing ring in August 2017, when he was stopped in the 10th round by Floyd Mayweather, earning a reported 100 million US dollars.
The match up between the Russian and the Irishman is expected to be the biggest grossing UFC event of all time, with McGregor estimated to be earning over 25 million dollars and a share of the pay per view revenue.
However, it seems the 30-year-old, who has not competed in an MMA fight since November 2016, will be returning to the octagon ring before the year is out, but not in his beloved New York.
“I’d love to fight in Madison Square Garden again, but I believe this one will be in Las Vegas,” he said
“I love New York City, to be able to be here free, as a free man… walking around this place….what a city.”
McGregor’s return will bolster what has been a poor showing for the first six months from the UFC
How Gareth A Davies sees the fight from 63 days out: ‘I think McGregor has this. We may say afterwards that we should have seen it coming, but McGregor’s striking has put so many fighters away who have been seen as having great chins. Nurmagomedov is easy to hit. McGregor hits opponents with shots they do not see coming. And hits very hard. Khabib will HAVE TO get McGregor to the ground and wrestle him. Although there has to be some consideration for the time out, I pick McGregor by KO or TKO in the opening round.
